The Solcon SOLSTART 17 230-S is a miniature analogue soft starter for three-phase squirrel-cage motors with a full-load current up to 17 A, set for 230 V, 50/60 Hz mains. It is started and stopped from a voltage-free (dry) contact and gives smooth, stepless acceleration and optional soft stop. It is the 230 V version; the SOLSTART 17 400-S is the same frame for 400 V mains.
How does the SOLSTART work?
Two sets of thyristors ramp the motor voltage up from an adjustable initial level. At the end of the start, two built-in bypass relays take over and carry the motor current, so the thyristors only conduct during starting. When soft stop is set, the voltage is ramped down on the stop command. The starter is rated for 3.5 times rated current for 5 seconds at 40 °C and up to 4 starts per hour at full rating.
What can be adjusted on the front panel?
Three potentiometers set the initial voltage (10 to 80 % of mains), the ramp-up time (0.5 to 5 s) and the ramp-down time (0.5 to 5 s; at the minimum setting the motor stops immediately). Three LEDs show On, Ramp and Run. On this unit the control terminals are marked A1 and A2, next to the L1–L3 line and U/T1–W/T3 motor terminals.

What does "dry contact" control mean on the SOLSTART 17 230-S?
The start/stop input is driven by a voltage-free contact: closing it starts the motor and opening it stops it. Solcon warns never to apply voltage to the control terminals.
What is the difference between the SOLSTART 17 230-S and 17 400-S?
Both are 17 A SOLSTART units; the 230-S is labelled for 230 V mains and the 400-S for 400 V mains. Choose the one that matches your supply.
Does the SOLSTART have a built-in bypass?
Yes. Two internal bypass relays carry the motor current after the start ramp ends, so the thyristors conduct only while starting or soft stopping.
Can it perform a soft stop?
Yes. Set the Ramp-Down potentiometer between 0.5 and 5 s. At its minimum setting the motor stops immediately.
Do I still need an isolating device?
Yes. Solcon notes that full voltage can appear on the motor terminals whenever mains is connected, so a circuit breaker, switch or line contactor is required upstream.
