The Beckhoff EL2904 is a TwinSAFE EtherCAT terminal with four fail-safe digital outputs for 24 V DC actuators at up to 0.5 A per channel. Its outputs are controlled over Safety over EtherCAT (FSoE) by a TwinSAFE Logic-capable component, and it switches off on error (fail-stop). Beckhoff rates it for SIL 3 (EN 61508) and Category 4, PL e (EN ISO 13849-1). The side label reads EL2904 0000, "4 x Digital Output 24V DC / 0.5A".

How does a TwinSAFE output terminal work?
The EL2904 sits in an EtherCAT terminal segment like any other I/O terminal, but its outputs only switch when a TwinSAFE logic sends valid safety telegrams. Safety parameters are not stored in the terminal; the TwinSAFE logic sends them when the safety application starts. Each output can be wired 1-wire or 2-wire, and each channel has its own output and diagnostic LEDs.
What is the DIP switch on the side for?
It sets the terminal's FSoE (TwinSAFE) address, which has to match the address in the TwinSAFE project. Beckhoff also describes setting the safe address in software.

How does a TwinSAFE output terminal work?
A TwinSAFE logic (for example a TwinSAFE logic terminal or a controller with TwinSAFE) sends safety telegrams over EtherCAT. The EL2904 switches its outputs only on valid telegrams and switches off on any error.
What are the Beckhoff EL2904 DIP switch settings for?
