Is the S version right for a 3.3 V rail?
Yes. The S suffix trips at 2.93 V typical (2.89 to 2.96 V at 25 °C), and Maxim specs it on a 3 V to 3.6 V supply. For a 5 V rail you want the L or M version, for a 3.0 V rail the R (2.63 V).
How does the watchdog work on the MAX823?
Your processor toggles the WDI pin. If WDI sits high or low for longer than 1.6 s (1.12 to 2.40 s), the chip pulls RESET low for about 200 ms. Leave WDI open or tri-stated and the watchdog is off, so you can use it as a plain reset IC.
What is on each pin?
Pin 1 RESET (active low, push-pull), pin 2 GND, pin 3 MR, pin 4 WDI, pin 5 VCC. MR has an internal 52 kΩ pull-up, so a pushbutton to ground is all a manual reset needs. No external parts are required.

What does a microprocessor supervisory circuit do?
It holds the processor in reset while the supply is too low and releases it about 200 ms after the rail is good. The MAX823 adds a watchdog and a manual-reset input.
Can I use the MAX823SEUK+T as an external watchdog timer IC?
Yes. Toggle WDI from firmware at least every 1.12 s; if the code hangs, it resets the processor.
How do I turn the watchdog off?
Leave WDI unconnected or drive it from a tri-stated output. The reset and MR functions keep working.
What is the difference between MAX823S and MAX823T?
Only the reset threshold: S trips at 2.93 V, T at 3.08 V. Pinout and timing are the same.
What does the marking AAAL mean?
The SOT23 is too small for the full part number, so Maxim prints AAAL on top for the MAX823S.
Is it a watchdog reset IC with push-pull output?
Yes. RESET on the MAX823 drives high and low, so no pull-up resistor is needed.
