When a drive slows a motor down, the motor acts as a generator and feeds energy back into the drive's DC bus. The drive's braking transistor switches that energy into the braking resistor, which turns it into heat, so the drive can stop the load quickly without tripping on overvoltage.

The brake chopper (braking transistor) is the switch, usually inside the drive, that decides when to dump energy. The brake resistor is the external part that absorbs it as heat. This listing is the resistor only.
