Microsonic bks+3/FIU, an ultrasonic fork sensor that reads the edge of a film or paper web. Analog output 0-10 V or 4-20 mA, 20-30 V DC supply, 5-pin M12 plug. Also searched as bks 3 fiu, bks3/FIU or Microsonic bks.

How does an ultrasonic web edge sensor work?

The lower leg of the fork sends short ultrasonic pulses and the upper leg receives them. The web running through the slot blocks part of that path, and the sensor turns the coverage into an analog signal. Sound does not care about color or transparency, so it handles clear film and dusty paper where an optical edge sensor struggles.

What is on the rating plate?

UB = 20-30 V DC, I0 < 50 mA, ILmax = 100 mA, 0-10 V / 4-20 mA, CE. The wiring diagram shows pin 1 +UB, pin 3 -UB, pin 4 the analog output F, pin 5 Sync and pin 2 drawn as a switching output. The units photographed carry serials 2128400 and 2122167.

Is this the same as the bks+3/FIU/A?

No. The /A suffix is microsonic's current version with IO-Link 1.1.3 and the Smart Sensor Profile. These units are the earlier bks+3/FIU without the /A. Fork size and working range are the same family figures: 30 mm wide, 43 mm deep, 12 mm working range.

Can the bks+3/FIU see clear film?

Yes. It works with sound, not light, so a transparent or light-sensitive web blocks the signal the same way paper does.

Which output does it give, voltage or current?

The plate lists 0-10 V / 4-20 mA on the analog pin. microsonic sets current or voltage with the push-button or LinkControl.

How do I set the edge position?

Use the T button on top. On the current bks+ models, holding it about 3 seconds with the fork empty sets the zero point; the three LEDs (+ 0 -) show where the edge sits.

What cable does it need?

A 5-pin M12 female cable. Pin 1 +UB, pin 3 -UB, pin 4 analog, pin 5 Sync, pin 2 switching output, as printed on the plate.

Does it have IO-Link?

The plate does not mention IO-Link. microsonic marks the IO-Link 1.1.3 version with /A in the part number, and these units have no /A.
