This is a Thorlabs M940L3 mounted LED: a 940 nm infrared LED on a finned 30.5 mm heat sink, rated by Thorlabs at 800 mW minimum output with a 1000 mA maximum drive current. Condition: used. The label on the back reads THORLABS M940L3, M00838221, CE.
What are the M940L3 specifications?
Per the Thorlabs spec sheet: nominal wavelength 940 nm (peak 950 nm typical), bandwidth 37 nm FWHM, output 800 mW minimum and 1000 mW typical at 1000 mA, forward voltage 2.75 V typical, 1 x 1 mm emitter, 90° viewing angle, and SM1 (1.035"-40) internal thread at the front of the heat sink. Thorlabs rates it Risk Group RG0 (exempt) under IEC 62471.
Is the cable original?
No. Thorlabs fits the M940L3 with a cable ending in a 4-pin M8 circular connector (pins 1 and 2 for the LED, pins 3 and 4 for an internal EEPROM). On this unit the cable ends in a white rectangular plug, with a tag reading "TO WA86050". A Thorlabs driver needs the M8 plug, so plan to refit one or use your own constant-current supply.
How do you drive a 940 nm mounted LED?
With a constant current source that does not exceed 1000 mA and can supply 2.75 V. Thorlabs recommends its DC2200 or LEDD1B LED drivers, or the DC4100/DC4104 with the DC4100-HUB. Give the cooling fins free air: Thorlabs notes the case can run up to 25 °C above ambient.
