RSF Elektronik MS 82.40-2G N10 scanning head for the MS 82 exposed linear encoder, sold on its own, without the scale. The label reads MS 82.40-2G N10, Signal 5 V square wave, U+5V, Nr. 39 724 107 01, CE. Also written MS82.40-2G or MS 82.40.
The head has a short black cable ending in a metal-hooded 15-pin D-sub male connector with thumbscrews. The optical window on the face is clean in the photos.
What resolution does the MS 82.40 give?
In the RSF MS 82 catalog, the .40 version has x20 integrated interpolation, 0.05 µm system resolution and 0.48 m/s maximum traverse speed, with 100 ns minimum edge separation.
How does an interferential linear encoder work?
The working principle in short: the MS 82 reads an 8 µm phase grating on a glass or glass ceramic scale through a phase grating in the head. Interference gives two sine signals 90° apart with a 4 µm signal period; the head then interpolates them into square wave pulses.
Do I need a scale with it?
Yes. This is the reading head only. It needs an MS 82 scale (glass or glass ceramic, with or without adhesive tape, accuracy grade ±3 µm/m per RSF) already on the machine.
