Optical Engineering 22-UV UV lamp in a Macken Instruments 24K Near IR Display Kit, used, from Lumenis stock. The kit is for seeing near-infrared laser beams: the phosphor plates show the IR beam spot, and the UV lamp recharges them. The markings are Optical Engineering's and Macken's; the Lumenis link is where it came from. Also searched as 22UV and Macken 24K.
What is in the case?
- Optical Engineering Model 22-UV lamp, 115v, 60Hz, 4w, made in USA, in a polished reflector housing with a black UV tube and a knob on the side
- Grey power cable ending in a three-way screw terminal strip, not a wall plug
- A display plate with two yellow IR-sensitive surfaces, marked 1 and 2
- A beam probe strip with a yellow surface marked 1, in a plastic bag
- The Macken 24K carry case with foam lining
How does a near IR display card work?
Macken's phosphor surfaces store energy from room light or a UV lamp. Near-IR light makes them release it as visible light, so the beam shows on the plate. Quantum Design, who sell Macken's beam probes, recommend the 22-UV lamp for charging them.
Is the kit complete?
A full 24K kit is sold with plate surfaces #1, #2 and #3 and beam probes #1 and #3. The photos show surfaces marked 1 and 2 and one probe marked 1, so treat it as a partial kit. The plates show wear and dirt on the edges.

Questions about this part
Can I plug the 22-UV lamp straight into the wall?
Not as it is. The cable ends in a three-way screw terminal strip, so a 115V plug has to be fitted.
What is the Optical Engineering 22-UV used for?
It is a small long-wave UV lamp used to charge phosphor IR viewer cards and beam probes so they glow when hit by a near-IR laser beam.
Is this the same as an IR viewing card from Thorlabs?
It does the same job, showing a near-IR laser spot, but it is a Macken kit. We have no source for a direct equivalence.
Who made the kit, Lumenis?
No. The lamp is by Optical Engineering, Inc. and the kit case by Macken Instruments, Inc., both of Santa Rosa, California. It came from Lumenis stock.
Which surfaces are included?
Plate surfaces marked 1 and 2, and one beam probe marked 1.
