The MKS Instruments 253A-11020 is a Type 253A exhaust throttle valve, 32 mm size: a motor-driven butterfly valve that sits between a vacuum chamber and its pump and is positioned by an MKS controller to hold chamber pressure. The 253A is the earlier version of the MKS 253 throttle valve family, later replaced by the 253B. The model is also searched as 253A11020 and MKS 253A.
What does the label say?
The MKS Instruments, Inc. (Andover, MA) label reads MODEL 253A-11020, SIZE 32mm, Made in USA. A first line above it is partly worn and appears to read 253A-1-40-2/S021-84. The motor cap carries an MKS label with patent no. 4,327,894.
How does an MKS throttle valve work?
MKS describes the 253 valve as a butterfly valve that regulates the removal of gas from a vacuum chamber. It is normally mounted on a Roots blower, diffusion, turbo, cryo or other high vacuum pump. The controller turns the butterfly to change the pumping speed seen by the chamber, and that controls chamber pressure. A non-linear actuator between the butterfly shaft and the motor shaft gives a linear valve response, so the controller needs little tuning across the range.
What is the difference between the MKS 253A and 253B?
Both are MKS Type 253 exhaust throttle valves. The 253A used a hex connector cable; MKS states that an adapter cable, CB651-31-1, is needed to replace a 253A with a 253B in an existing system. This unit has the hex-style multi-pin connector on a short braided lead.
What is in the photos?
The complete valve: stainless steel valve body with clamp-style flanges on both ends and a butterfly flapper inside, metal arm, black actuator housing with the MKS label, and the round motor with its connector lead. Condition: used.
