The Beckhoff EL1904 is a TwinSAFE EtherCAT terminal with 4 fail-safe digital inputs for 24 V DC sensors with potential-free contacts, such as emergency stop buttons, safety door switches and light curtain contacts. The input signals go over Safety over EtherCAT (FSoE) to a TwinSAFE logic component, where they are evaluated. Beckhoff rates it SIL 3 to IEC 61508 and PL e, Category 4 to EN ISO 13849-1. The yellow housing marks it as a TwinSAFE safety terminal.
How does the Beckhoff EL1904 work?
Each input has its own 24 V clock output (Input 1+ to Input 4+). The terminal sends short test pulses on these outputs and reads them back on Input 1- to Input 4-, so it can detect cross-circuits and wiring faults. Inputs can be evaluated as single channels or in pairs for two-channel sensors. Beckhoff gives a typical reaction time of 4 ms (read input, write to E-bus).
How do you set the EL1904 DIP switches?
The TwinSAFE address is set on the two 8-way DIP switches on the left side of the housing (both visible in the photos). Addresses 1 to 65535 are available; 0 is not valid, and each address may be used only once in a network. The same address must be entered as the FSoE address in the TwinCAT System Manager.
What does the date code mean?
The label reads Ser. Number 00433228 and Date Code 04130503. In the Beckhoff format (week, year, software, hardware) that is week 04 of 2013, software version 05, hardware version 03. Beckhoff states a 20-year lifetime for TwinSAFE components, counted from the date of manufacture. Per the manual, units up to software version 05 are rated 0 to +55 °C in operation.

How does a TwinSAFE input terminal work?
It powers each sensor contact from its own clock output and checks the returning signal with test pulses. This lets it detect cross-circuits and wiring faults. The safe state is then evaluated in the TwinSAFE logic over FSoE.
How do I set the EL1904 DIP switches?
